Background

While initial reports by those who attended this show back in 1997 were lukewarm, this show has grown in stature over time to be appreciated as one of the best of that year, breathtaking in both sound and performance. The audio record has long been widely sought after in trades: now the VLS is proud to bring you the total concert record via DVD and VCD.

The show was filmed professionally as part the Montreux Jazz Festival in the Stravinski Auditorium, yet despite the fine performance and production, there are no reports of it ever having been broadcast. A screen-edited copy of the master eventually surfaced, but no more than a handful of VHS copies ever circulated. When one of those was mailed to the bunker by a VLS supporter, work on your behalf by our creative team began.

As it turns out, this is a classic case of archival restoration in lieu of an official release. In the only circulating tape, a significant portion of the viewable screen has been blocked off; our best efforts have been made to compensate for this defect. In addition, problematic lighting ranging from lime green to bright red required further balancing for hue and saturation. While adjustments to a "challenging" analog source will of course yield less than the dreamed-for digital quality, we nevertheless feel confident that Van fans will rejoice in the results: a wide-screen VM VCD / DVD concert, virtually uncirculated up until now, that has excellent sound and was professionally shot. We are all fortunate that the source was made available to us, and VLS is justly proud of our efforts to bring it to you in this format. Special thanks to kelisarb for the many hours he spent on this project, If you are looking for a copy, ask on vantrades!
